A vision of the future which becomes our reality. This is what has fascinated Mad Max, Orwell’s 1984, Buñuel’s L’Age d’Or, cyberpunk, Kubrick, Anthony Burgess, and the Ballet Ensemble of the South Bohemian Theatre. For the first time ever, the legendary A Clockwork Orange will be transformed into a dance production at the South Bohemian Theatre. The decadently surreal dance comedy uncovers what happens when the powerful decide to make us their puppets. Shall we let them?

The iconic A Clockwork Orange as a ballet? Why not, if the artists from the DekkaDancers creative unit with their team and the outstanding dancers of the South Bohemian Ballet get down to it. The controversial topic has been reworked without unnecessarily difficult narration. The imaginative choreography, free from any ballet clichés, takes pride in occasional millimetre timing, only to burst out into spontaneous, animalistic dance. Kubrick’s film succeeds brilliantly in conveying the “aesthetic elevation” of violence through music and visual art. Acher’s soundtrack has references to Beethoven and uses colloquial Czech; Eva Jiřikovská’s minimalist design surprises the audience with sophisticated insights and gradually revealed symbolism. And then there is the great Sebastiano Mazzia as Alex. In short, unexpected, engraved in my memory.
